Point Breeze Credit Union was recently honored with an Excellence Award from the Credit Union National Association. The award recognizes Point Breeze for innovative solutions in optimizing credit union performance. Recent restructuring and additions to their lending services, lead the Hunt Valley-based Credit Union to record net loan growth.

September 29, 2014 – Hunt Valley, MD – Point Breeze Credit Union was recently honored with an Excellence Award by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Operations, Sales & Service Council. The award recognizes Point Breeze for innovative solutions in optimizing credit union performance.

Point Breeze Credit Union won the award in the miscellaneous category for its new centralized lending structure that provided more efficient member services and significantly grew loan portfolios. In 2013 the Credit Union experienced record net loan growth of 8.4%. Point Breeze’s improved efficiency and performance is also credited to the implementation of a formal rate committee to quickly react to market rates as well as adding RV and motorcycle loans to their Indirect Lending Program. The program addition attributed to an increase of 40.8% in the RV and motorcycle loan categories.

“By focusing our efforts and changing to a centralized lending environment, establishing a rate committee, and adding to our indirect lending channel, Point Breeze has become a more efficient and attractive option for our members,” Bernard McLaughlin, President and CEO of Point Breeze Credit Union.

The CUNA Operations, Sales & Service Council is a national network of more than 850 credit union operations, sales & service professionals across the United States.

“The Operations, Sales & Service Council Excellence Award recognizes and honors credit unions for their leadership and vision in Operations, Sales and Service in the credit union industry," said Steve Stryker, Chair of the Awards Committee for CUNA. “We were overwhelmed by the amazing stories all of the entrants shared with us and they should be proud of what they have achieved. Whether it is remaking a branch for the 21st Century or collaborating with other credit unions to save members money, their creativity and originality can inspire us all.”

Shannon Carter accepted the award on behalf of Point Breeze Credit Union at the CUNA Operations, Sales & Service Council’s 17th annual conference held September 21-24, 2014 in Las Vegas.

A Big Thank You to all our members and friends who donated to our “Thanks-for-Giving Food Drive”. It was a huge success!!
It didn’t matter if you gave a little or a lot, when you get it all together at the end, that’s what counts!! We have everything except a turkey and a pumpkin pie. I’m sure the Johns Hopkins Emergency Food closet will provide many needy families with a great meal for the upcoming holiday. Just a reminder, we are doing it again for December. The day after Thanksgiving we will kick off our “Holidays-are-for-Giving” Food Drive. Please let me know if you wish to open your hearts and donate to JHBMC Emergency Food Closet again.

Holiday Gallery and Pop-up Shop opened Oct. 11th in the Old Dundalk Shopping Village. The storefront formerly occupied by the Tobacco shop is on loan from Blue Ocean Realty. The DRC was able to negotiate use of the store front for 3 months. The Holiday Gallery and Pop-Up Shop is for the local crafters to exhibit their items and sell prior to the Holiday season. The store hopes to bring attention to artistic locals. Pictured on Opening Night are Leah Bunk, Cary and Laura Quintana and Dotty Cristy.

The Optimist Club of Dundalk honored its 24th local citizen and 16th humanitarian May 21 during the annual Citizen of the Year Banquet at the United Auto Workers Hall in Highlandtown. Joseph Cristy, husband of Chamber office manager Dotty Cristy, was named the 2013 Citizen of the Year for his decades of volunteer baseball and softball coaching for area recreation programs, including the Gray-Charles, Eastwood and Dundalk-Eastfield Rec and Parks councils, Post 38 American Legion, Harbor Federal, the Community College of Baltimore County and other local teams, and for his participation in the Dundalk Sports Hall of Fame, Junior Achievement, the Sheriff Fowble Foundation and a number of additional community organizations including the annual Heritage Fair committee. Danielle Alderson earned the Dundalk Humanitarian distinction for the numerous charitable efforts she and her Chick-fil-A Eastpoint staff have undertaken over the years. Her activities include awarding numerous $1,000 S. Truett Cathy Scholarships, hosting fundraising events for Santa Claus Anonymous and other charitable concerns, working with Sparrows Point and Patapsco high school athletic departments to purchase equipment and uniforms for students, and donating food and snacks to a long list of school, church, community and philanthropic organizations including the Dundalk Chamber. The Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Dundalk Chamber from 1971 through 1986 and taken over by the Optimists in 1990 after three years of inactivity, honors residents of greater Dundalk who have volunteered their time and talents to improve the community. This year’s banquet is the 40th in the history of the award. The Humanitarian Award, instituted by the Optimists in 1994, honors those who live outside the Dundalk area but whose personal involvement in Dundalk programs and projects merits acknowledgment by the community. Optimist President Paul Kram welcomed guests at the event and assisted with presentations and Bob Crandell, board member and former president of the organization, served as emcee. Joe Stadler of the Dundalk-Patapsco Neck Historical Society and Museum, who was named 2011 Citizen of the Year, presented a long list of projects on which this year’s Humanitarian Award was based and the Community College of Baltimore County’s Dr. Sandra Kurtinitis, the 2012 Humanitarian, presented the award to Danielle, who offered a moving acceptance speech. Joe Cristy’s volunteer efforts were enumerated by 1977 Citizen of the Year Bob Staab. The 2012 award winner, Joe Falbo, introduced this year’s honoree. The Optimist Club of Dundalk raises $25,000 annually through various activities to help fund youth programs and other community projects and to stage the annual Dundalk Heritage Parade on July 4th.
